안녕하세요. 유학네트에서 수속한 김은지입니다.
 현재 미국 포틀랜드 ELS에서 semi-intensive 과정을 수강 중입니다.

현재 저는 ELS 111레벨을 수강중인데요.
 110레벨부터 Advanced level에 속하는데 Advanced level은 총 5가지의 모듈로 구성되어 있습니다.
 111레벨은 그 5자기의 모듈 중 Environmental Engineering에 대한 공부를 하고 있는데
 대부분 Green building, 그리고 Air filtration system에 대한 내용을 공부하고 있습니다.
 배우고 있는 교과서는 무려 Stanford 교수진들이 집필을 했더라고요.
 111레벨은 110레벨과는 다르게 프레젠테이션을 2번이나 해야되는데요,
 한번은 개인 발표였고, 두 번째는 2-3명이 해야 하는 group presentation입니다.
 그래서 오늘은 얼마전에 마친 그 2번째 발표에 대해서 써보고자 합니다.

그룹 발표의 주제는 2020년부터 개정되는 오리건의 환경 정책 중 하나를 소개하는 것이었는데요.
 저희는 그 중에서도 grocery store에서 종이 가방을 더 이상 무료로 주지 않는 정책을 소개했습니다.
 2020년 1월 1일부터 50cents를 지불해야 합니다.
 지난번 개인 발표는 제가 말할 내용을 몽땅 외우지 못한 것이 한이 되어
 이번에는 제가 말하는 내용을 모조리 다 외워서 발표했어요.
 그래서 더 만족스러웠고, 기억에 남는 발표가 된 것 같습니다. 

그럼 여기에 제가 직접 작성해서 말했던 내용을 한번 써볼게요.
 열심히 외워서 그런지 아직도 기억에 생생하네요.
 단어가 어렵지 않아서 이해하는 데 무리가 없으실 겁니다.

Starting Jan 1, 2020, Oregon’s retail stores and restaurants
 can no longer provide any single-use checkout bags.
 They also must charge at least 50 cents for paper bags although some restaurants
 may still provide paper bags at no cost.

This change was approved by 2019 Oregon legislature
 which passed the Sustainable Shopping Initiative.
 

Then, what does this mean for consumers?
 Customers who don’t bring their own bags face a small fee at the checkout
 and this fee goes to the business and it helps to recover cost.
 The fee can vary by location. But, if you do have WIC(Women, Infants, and Children)
or EBT(Electronic Benefit Transfer) card, it can be waived.
Like Yuri said, over 23 states have their own bans and by 2021,
 Puerto Rico and Guam also plan to have their own bans, too.

So if over 22% of a country’s population will adopt a bag-free lifestyle by 2021,
 should other states follow in line?
 To answer that question, we’ll examine the arguments on the both sides of the debate.

First, what are the cons of plastic bags?
 According to Eco watch, ten tons of plastic bags
 wash out to sea in the Los Angeles area every day.
 Sea life can consume these plastic fragments up to 24,000 tons
 per year affecting the food chain.

Unlike reusable bags, plastic bags take lifetimes to biodegrade.
 Furthermore, plastic bags can be carried far away
 due to their light weight and it can cause more serious environmental problems.

Then, what are the pros of plastic bags?
 A 2018 study by the Ministry of Environmental and Food of Denmark
 showed that using plastic bags had lower impact on the environment than 6 other reusable bags.
 It stated that other reusable bags have to be used more than 35 times
 in order to make up for their pollution, while a single plastic bag
 would only have to be used just one time to make up for its pollution.

Besides giving us more convenience, there are other reasons plastic bags should be used.
 For example, there are lots of companies that manufacture plastic bags
 such as Formosa Plastics and Novolex, and this ban could mean layoffs for their employees.
